Summary: The Catcher in the Rye takes place in New York around the 1950s. He gets kicked out of his school because he is failing most of his classes. Holden leaves his school early. He really isn't supposed to leave until the term ends but since they already let him go, he leaves. He decides to stay at a hotel in New York city. He calls his old girlfriend and they set a date. They go and see a Broadway play. After that they go a restraint and Holden kind of makes fun of her and she leaves. Later on that night he goes home to talk to his sister because his parents are gone, he talks to is sister for a while and then his parents get home. He leaves his house and goes to his old teacher's house. He falls asleep there and wakes up to his old teacher rubbing his forehead. He also getting mixed up with a pimp and a prostitute. The book ends with the quote, 'It's funny. Don't ever tell anybody anything. If you do, you start missing everybody." (Salinger 214). To me that suggests that he is still faced by the same problems he has dealt with throughout the book.
Why is it outstanding? The Catcher in the Rye is an outstanding novel. The book is written so that you only see the story through the eyes of the main character, Holden. By doing this the author, J.D. Salinger, creates a visual of what goes through a teenage kids head while under stress. Holden continuously goes off on random tangents. When he does it can go on for many pages. These rants are entertaining and let you understand what kind of person he is and how he deals with life. One quote that really shows how much Holden dwells on the past is, " So what I did, I wrote about my brother Allie's baseball mitt. It was a very descriptive subject. It really was. My brother Allie had this left-handed fielders mitt. He was left-handed. The thing that was descriptive about it, though, was that he had poems written all over the fingers and the pockets and everywhere. In green Ink. He wrote them on it so that he'd have something to read when he was in the field and nobody was up to bat. He's dead now" (Salinger 38). In that quote he was spouses to be writing about a room but instead he goes off on one of his rants. Holden also hates "phony" or "fake" people. Throughout the book Holden meets up with random people he knows from other Prep. schools. His rants are what made this book fun and interesting.
I would recommend it The Catcher in the Rye is a book i would recommend to someone who is having a tough time, or just wants to read a excellent book.
